The Virtuous Mother Worth More than Rubies – By Father Gabriel Alkass
Today is the feast of the Virgin Mary and Mother’s Day. So, we celebrate the heavenly mother and the mother in the flesh. What a beautiful day.
So, my beloved, today, our sermon is titled “Virtuous Mother Worth More than Rubies” – who can find a virtuous mother that is worth much more than Rubies? God will not create enmity between the Mother, the Lord Jesus, and Satan. That’s why the Lord waited five thousand years to find that kind of mother.
Today, I’ll mention three reasons why the Virgin Mary is so valuable.
- She never praised herself; she had humility.
- When St. Joseph considered leaving her secretly, she did not defend herself. But heaven did.
- She had to tolerate Herod’s threats and many others. And yet, she never complained and remained silent.
So, since this kind of mother was worth so much more than rubies, that’s why the church asks her to pray and intercede for her son.
Let me remind you of a beautiful story from the Old Testament, the story of Elijah when he prayed to the Lord “I want you to stop the rain.” And God listened to him for 3.5 years. And then, after that time, Elijah prayed again, and God poured rain. God loves His only righteous people.
If we pray or celebrate, then that means the Lord will listen to his mother.
Now, let’s speak of earthly mothers—the mother who found the most expensive diamonds in the world. Jesus spoke in a parable about the one, and today we will think of mothers who sold all the small pieces of diamonds and bought the priceless one.
I know you heard the story, but we need to focus on two words: “found” and “bought.”
- We have already “found” Jesus and are worshipping him.
- But the most crucial part is to sell your small pieces and go buy the most expensive one, the priceless one. Which means Jesus.
Whatever you have in this world, God bless you. But put them aside, and not in your heart. And buy Jesus, the priceless one. That mother who makes that choice will be very wise in God’s eyes.
And she does not need a vault to keep this diamond safe. Instead, keep Jesus in your heart, the best vault in all the world.
“Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.…” Jesus says in Luke 9:58 that he came to the world as a poor person. He came looking for hearts, not a home, and found rest.
Ephesians 6:1 says, “Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.” Because your mom brought you to life, and your mother was there 24/7.
And when you kiss your mother on Mother’s Day, her heart will melt.
Dear children, obey her and honor her because it is one of the ten commitments: “Honor your father and mother that your day. “Honor your father and your mother so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.” As it says in Exodus 20:12
When you are honoring her, your mother, you are honoring God.
